The Elmira Seventh-day Adventist Church October 2006 Newsletter |
We will resume Thursday evening Bible Study October 5, 7:00 PM at the church. All are encouraged to come as we study together. Beginning in October, we will be starting a new series using the book Christian Service, by Ellen White. Anyone needing to purchase the book, contact Sharon as soon as possible.
Pastor Curtis is currently preaching a sermon series on Discipleship. Topics have included "The Cost of Discipleship," "The Privilege of Prayer," and "When the Church Prays." As we commit our lives to our Lord as His disciples, let us continually seek to serve Him completely. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be My disciples. John 15:8.
The Presence - This special series with Shawn Boonstra, It Is Written Speaker, will focus on the Sanctuary in the context of final events. Beginning September 29, 7:00 PM, it will run for 5 evenings through October 3. Come, and invite your friends!
Worship service October 7 will be the Sabbath sermon from the recent "Most Amazing Prophecies" series by Doug Batchelor: "The Tree of Life," prophecies about paradise and your life now.
Sabbath, October 14 is our next planned service of foot washing and the Lord's Supper. Every disciple is called upon to participate publicly, and thus bear witness that he accepts Christ as a personal Saviour. It is at these, His own appointments, that Christ meets His people, and energizes them by His presence....All who come with their faith fixed upon Him will be greatly blessed. The Desire of Ages, p. 656.
The Master ordained the service of foot washing to signify renewed cleansing, to express a willingness to serve one another in Christlike humility, and to unite our hearts in love. Fundamental Beliefs, 15.
For a little over a year now, we have been hosting Red Cross Blood Drives. With our large fellowship hall and many Sabbath School rooms, we have plenty of space to invite the public to the "Southside Community Blood Drive" each two months. At our last drive, held September 19, forty six people came, and thirty three pints were collected. Comments were made about the nice music we were playing on CD; we met a lady who watches 3ABN "all the time;" and a nurse asked for information about our church services and reading materials. A variety of literature was available for the donors in the waiting area. Since July 2005, 186 pints have been collected at our location. We consider this a continuing witness as we provide health and spiritual ministry in our area.
We especially want to thank our callers and all those who helped out or donated. Our next drive is scheduled for Tuesday, November 21, 1:30-6:30 PM. We are in need of callers to contact previous donors in the area around the church. As we receive lists of close to 1200 names to contact, any help would really be appreciated! If you can call a list, please contact Sharon.
This program will promote a healthy lifestyle including practical information as well as group support to cultivate lasting and informed lifestyle behaviors. Featuring local health professionals in areas such as: Nutrition, exercise, and diet. This will be held in the church fellowship hall each Tuesday, beginning October 10, at 7:00 PM for six weeks. Topics include: "How to Have a Healthy Lifestyle,""How to Be Physically Fit," "Knowing About Fats and Carbs," "Stress and How to Deal with It," "The Mind and Body Connection,"and "Preventing Disease." There will be a $10 materials fee. To register, call Barb or Sharon.
Monday, October 9, 5:00-6:30 PM there will be a spaghetti dinner in the Church Fellowship Hall. The menu includes spaghetti with vegetarian meatballs, salad, bread, and desert.
Cost will be: Adults - $4.50, Children under 12 - $3.00 Pay at the door. This is an fund raiser for Personal Ministries.

With the cooler weather on the way, we enjoy the large variety of homemade soups our cooks prepare. We continue with a luncheon each Sabbath following the worship service. Everyone is invited. Please bring a dish to pass.
