IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

WILL TO DO HIS WILL

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God. John 7:17.

I have always wanted to do justice to the will of man. I have always respected well-disciplined people who ordered their lives pretty much to the line. But many never seem to be able to break the chains of habit and make their decisions stick.

I have urged a lot of people in my time to make the right decision for God and for His character. When the pressure comes many simply do not want to be what they know they ought to be. Granted that a man should not be reckless or careless in his choices. There are times when a man must grant himself a delay in making some choices. But when confronted with Jesus Christ and the claims of His truth, we gain nothing by indecision.

There is always some risk to a man's choice. But if life in Christ is to have any reality at all, then one must move forward with a courage as did the Israelites at the Red Sea. The man who acts decidedly for Christ knows the power of God to save.

When we insist upon delay are we being really honest with ourselves? When we say we want more time is there not a tendency to trifle with the truth? Hesitation before the claims of Jesus Christ often reveals unwillingness to give up one's own way.

The more sincere and true we are in our devotion to truth, the more life will be settled for righteousness. The decision for Christ may involve changes; let us make them. There will be new adjustments. Let its make them. The longer we remain uncommitted and undecided, the fiercer becomes the conflict within us.

Our finest moments are those when we choose Christ. Our worst snoods are those that seek to live apart from Him. God is sufficient for all our needs. A young woman who had strayed far from God came to see me during a Week of Religious Devotion. There was a new urgency in her manner, a committed tone in her voice. "I have determined to say Yes to Christ," she said. "I am prepared to give up all that comes between Christ and me. I have already told my friends." That commitment completely changed her life. She gained Christ. From then Christ took over as He always does.
