IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

Faithful to Christ OCTOBER 19

CHRISTIAN BOLDNESS

In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Eph. 3:12.

The meaning of the word translated "boldness" includes unreserved communication, free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage—in this instance, in our relationship toward God. Steadfast confidence is one of the great needs of the Christian life. Many professed Christians run well for a time. But they lack steadfastness. They grow cold and leave the church. The crowning grace of confidence through Christ is missing. Such confidence makes us abound in hope, glory in tribulation; it makes us strong to resist and overcome temptation. No one can conquer without the spirit of a conqueror. Only when we have learned to be bold with God can we be bold to face the enemy. "Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward" (Heb. 10:35).

God urges us to "come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (chap. 4:16). We are to draw nigh to God without fear, without doubt, as a child speaking to his father. This steadfast confidence, this boldness, is the essence of a healthy Christian life. Thus is the God-given right of every child of God. We are not to live in fear, uncertain whether Christ has accepted us or not.

"Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way . . . ; let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith" (chap. 10:19-22). By His own blood Christ rent the veil, giving; us access to God. This is the measure of our boldness before the Father. The more we honor the sacrifice of Christ and see its worth, the stronger will be our confidence. The blood of Christ is the only currency that is acceptable to the Father. Bring this with you in faith as you approach Him. Believe that sinful and feeble as you are, you can draw nigh to God and enter into His presence. The proof that you have a living working faith is that it makes you to hold fast your confidence firm unto the end. Consequently, our religion never becomes a burden for us to carry.
