IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

Power From God APRIL 23

"GIVE GLORY TO HIM"—2

Ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Cor. 6:20.

The fullness of the Holy Spirit, possession by the Spirit, means to belong wholly to Christ. Nothing is withheld. We must consecrate, dedicate, our whole lives to God. Dedication is another word for sanctification. "The very God of peace sanctify you wholly" (I Thess. 5:23). To cleanse is to separate from sin. To sanctify is to dedicate one's life to God. This belonging involves transference of ownership. To live as if we belong in part to ourselves or to the world means we are not fully possessed by the Spirit. We are to consider ourselves purchased by the blood of Christ. We are His property. Our whole life is lived in the light of this fact.

"He that believeth on me, . . . out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified)" (John 7:38, 39).

This outpouring of the Spirit depended upon Christ's being glorified. This is true in us. We must see that Christ is enthroned in our hearts. When we make this possible, then the water of life will flow like a river. The dedicated life, the life set apart, belonging to God, is the Christ-centered life. Every other kind of living is self-centered. Have we stopped halfway in giving ourselves to God? We must be honest with ourselves and with God. Then the Holy Spirit will take it from there. It is our responsibility to make the commitment. It is Christ's responsibility to give us the Spirit. Then Christ will keep us filled and overflowing.

The fullness of the Spirit is no temporary excitement. It is like the water coming into the reservoir. What reservoir is there that does not need daily replenishing. We need to be filled all the time as we give out to others the fruit of the Spirit. Let us not limit God and the Spirit. Let our Christian lives be like an abounding river that cannot be contained, refreshing our homes, our children, our friends, and our churches. Then our witness to the indwelling Christ gives glory to God.
